Effect of charging of aerosols in the lower atmosphere of Mars during the dust storm of 2001

چکیده
Aerosols are very important in the Martian climate system. Aerosols get charged by the attachment of ions in the atmosphere. Charging of aerosols reduces the conductivity of the atmosphere as the very mobile ions are lost during the ion-aerosol attachment. During a dust storm the dust opacity increases and more ion-aerosol attachment process occurs and consequently conductivity reduces further. It was found that with the background aerosols (dust opacity 0.2), the conductivity close to the surface of Mars was reduced by a factor of 5, but during the dust storm (opacity 5) of 2001 the conductivity decreased by about 2 orders of magnitude. r 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Extended abstract 1- INTRODUCTION Atmospheric aerosols, solid and liquid particles in the atmosphere, play a crucial role in the atmospheric radiation equilibrium. These particles have an influence on the scattering and absorption of short wavelength radiation, and on the other hand, affect radiation absorption and emission in long wavelengths. Dust particles are among the importan...

Introduction: Dust storm is one of the air pollutants in desert areas that have damaging effects on environmental ecosystems. This phenomenon usually happens when severe winds occur in arid areas which are accompanied by the ascent of dust particles to the upper layers of the atmosphere. HYSPLIT model can assist in detecting the path of dust entering the stations. In addition, synoptic patterns...

Dust particles consist of important aerosols and resulting in blowing strong winds on the surface of desert areas. These particles enter the atmosphere under the influence of different factors including: weather condition (wind, precipitation and temperature), land surface (topography, humidity level, roughness and vegetation), soil features (texture, density, composition and land use (agricult...
متن کاملThe role of Low level jet and determining the trajectory in the Persian Gulf dust storm (case study: 17-19 February, 2017)
Dust is a natural process in the desert areas. Strong winds on the dry soil surface make the particulate matter suspended in the air near the ground. In recent years, the influence of several natural factors has led to the further spread of dust in the western and southwestern parts of Iran. A storm take placed in the Khuzestan province and the northwest of the Persian Gulf, in February 17-19, ...

The impacts of Dust and Sand Storms (DSS) on people, crops, livestock, infrastructure and health are well documented. Data have accumulated on the deleterious effects of dust aerosols when they settle on plants. Sand blasting of low growing plants is a common cause of failure in reforestation efforts. Burial of plants by moving sands are also a cause of much damage. The physics of moving sand a...
